  • Custom Pickguard Service

    Overview

If you can't find the model you are looking for on our website, we can still cut you a custom guard from the materials on this page, and guarantee a precise retrofit as long as you can provide us with the information we need (details at bottom of page).

We typically charge a one-time $50 template fee to create a custom template of uncommon models that are not in our library. We keep the resulting file on hand and future orders with this template will not be charged the fee. Keep in mind that pricing may vary depending on the nature of the custom request. For example, discounts may apply for models we wish to add to our library, or for simple pickup or control modifications to templates currently in our library.

We can cut any pickguard shape from our existing engraved patterns (excluding certain tailored designs), but we do not do one-off artwork. For any custom shapes, please plan to choose from our existing patterns and materials.

    Customizing a Common Model

We offer a variety of replacement pickguards for common models such as the Fender Telecaster, Stratocaster, and Jazzmaster, or Gibson Les Paul and SG. We can accommodate different pickup routes, switch placement, and other customizations as needed. The dropdown system on our product pages may help guide you through many of these possibilities, but if you need more information or options, please contact us for a quote (or assistance).

    Custom Template for Uncommon Models

The Decoboom website provides off-the-shelf customization of pickguards for a wide variety of common guitar models, but we don't have templates for everything.

We have cut hundreds of custom shapes for our customers and we are very good at reverse-engineering a shape for a precise retrofit. This service does come with a cost, however, as we have to create a custom template for your guard before we can cut it using our CNC.

The standard template upcharge to create a custom pickguard template is $50. This fee is in addition to the price of whatever design or material you choose, and may vary depending on the size of your pickguard or the complexity of the project. We will in all cases be fair and transparent in pricing the custom project.

If we happen to have a template on file that is simply not on the website, the standard upcharge may be reduced, or in rare cases, waived. Similarly, strange pickup or control configurations that are nonetheless able to use our existing templates for the overall shape may qualify for a slightly discounted setup fee.

When we create a custom guard for you, we use our computer to carefully draft a digital vector to recreate the outline of your pickguard model. We then create tool paths for cutting, countersinking, and beveling your guard on our CNC.

Once we have your template, we keep it in on file so you can order other guards without paying the template fee again.

How to Order a Custom Pickguard

Your first step is to select the material you would like for your custom guard. On a product page for pickguard materials, in the first dropdown menu, titled "Brand/Type," you should select the last option, "Custom--Not Listed." Several forms will appear that will allow you to provide us with information about your custom request using that pickguard material. You can then reserve your custom guard by checking out and paying for the pickguard material.

Once you provide us with all the information we need to create a custom guard, we will assess the level of work we have to do on our end in order to make your custom guard. To create your template, we may need you to either send us the original guard, or to scan the front and back of your guard using a document scanner. We will then email you a custom invoice with a link that you can pay using your preferred method of payment for the template fee.

    Some Limitations

Most of our designs are universal and can be cut to any shape, but a few of our designs are not available for custom guard shapes. Examples of designs that are not available for custom shapes are the Streamline designs, the Bandit, or the Broken Arrow, because they are custom-tailored to the shape of the pickguard and may require considerable design time to recreate for other shapes.

Also, we sometimes receive requests for one-off designs to be engraved on a pickguard--such as pets, sports teams, company logos, etc. We don't mind these requests and we understand the desire to have personalized equipment. However, Decoboom's focus is on creating original designs to complement your instrument's appearance, and we go to great lengths to create designs that will honor the rich heritage of guitar models that in many cases have not changed in appearance since their creation in decades. This means we rarely take custom design requests except when working with guitar builders or retailers for special projects or amounting to significant volume. At the end of the day, we are first and foremost a design company, and not a personalization or trophy shop.

    Important Considerations

Finally, we ask that you make a careful effort to provide us with all the necessary information to create a precise template, and that you are confident in your material or design choices before making the final payment of your guard. It is very unlikely that we will ever be able to resell a one-off custom shape to another customer, so except in the case of a manufacturing defect or error, we cannot provide our standard exchange or refund if you change your mind about the pickguard configuration or material after we have created your guard. With that said, we work hard to have nothing but happy customers, and we will do everything we can to make sure this is a successful project. We simply ask that you be considerate of our time and efforts as well.

    Custom Template Instructions

If you wish to have Decoboom create a custom template for your model, you will need to either send us your guard, or email us a digital scan of the guard.

    Mailing Instructions

If you wish to send the guard, please notify us first and provide us with tracking information. When sending the guard, include your information, and pack the guard with cardboard or foam to keep it from getting bent in transit.

    Send the guard to:

    DECOBOOM
    1981 Nancy Ave.
    Los Osos, CA
    93402

    Scanning Instructions

If you wish to send us a scan of the guard, please scan the guard front AND back using a document scanner, at 400 dpi or greater resolution. Both JPEG or PDF formats are fine. As part of the scan, please include a ruler or 1" (one inch) reference box next to the guard to help us ensure that the file maintained the proper scale. If your guard is white, please make sure that you place an opaque colored paper behind the guard when scanning so that there is good contrast around the edges of the scan.
